HOW DOES MARIJUANA AFFECT THE BRAIN?

AKUDO EJELONU

Pot, weed, grass, ganja and skunk, are some of the common words used to describe the dried leaves drug known as marijuana. Marijuana is a cannabis plant that is "usually smoked or eaten to entice euphoria." (1). Throughout the years, there has been research on the negative and positive effects of marijuana on the human body and the brain. Marijuana is frequently beneficial to the treatment of AIDS, cancer, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, and chronic pain. However, researchers such as Jacques-Joseph Moreau have been working to explain how marijuana has harmful affects on the functions of central nervous system and hinders the memory and movement of the user's brain. The focus of my web paper is how the chemicals in marijuana, specifically cannabinoids and THC have an effect on the memory and emotions of a person's central nervous system.

Marijuana impinges on the central nervous system by attaching to brain's neurons and interfering with normal communication between the neurons. These nerves respond by altering their initial behavior. For example, if a nerve is suppose to assist one in retrieving short-term memory, cannabinoids receptors make them do the opposite. So if one has to remember what he did five minutes ago, after smoking a high dose of marijuana, he has trouble. Marijuana plant contains 400 chemicals and 60 of them are cannabinoids, which are psychoactive compounds that are produced inside the body after cannabis is metabolized or is extorted from the cannabis plant. Cannabinoids is an active ingredient of marijuana. The most psychoactive cannabinoids chemical in marijuana that has the biggest impact on the brain is tetrahydrocannibol, or THC. THC is the main active ingredient in marijuana because it affects the brain by binding to and activating specific receptors, known as cannabinoid receptors. "These receptors control memory, thought, concentration, time and depth, and coordinated movement. THC also affects the production, release or re-uptake (a regulating mechanism) of various neurotransmitters."(2) Neurotransmitters are chemical messenger molecules that carry signals between neurons. Some of these affects are personality disturbances, depression and chronic anxiety. Psychiatrists who treat schizophrenic patient advice them to not use this drug because marijuana can trigger severe mental disturbances and cause a relapse.

When one's memory is affected by high dose of marijuana, short-term memory is the first to be triggered. Marijuana's damage to short-term memory occurs because THC alters the way in which information is processed by the hippocampus, a brain area responsible for memory formation. "One region of the brain that contains a lot of THC receptors is the hippocampus, which processes memory."(3) Hippocampus is the part of the brain that is important for memory, learning, and the integration of sensory experiences with emotions and motivation. It also converts information into short-term memory. "Because it is a steroid, THC acts on the hippocampus and inhibits memory retrieval."(4) THC also alters the way in which sensory information is interpreted. "When THC attaches to receptors in the hippocampus, it weakness the short-term memory,"(5) and damages the nerve cells by creating structural changes to the hippocampus region of the brain. When a user has a high dose of marijuana, new information does not register into their brain and this may be lost from memory and they are not able to retrieve new information for more than a few minutes. There is also a decrease in the activity of nerve cells.

There are two types of memory behavior that is affected by marijuana, recognition memory and free cells. Recognition memory is the ability to recognize correct words. Users can usually recognize words that they previous saw before smoking but claim to recognize words that they did not previously see before smoking. This mistake is known as memory intrusions. Memory intrusions are also the consequence of THC affecting the free cell of the brain. "Marijuana disrupts the ability to freely recall words from a list that has been presented to an intoxicated subject."(6) For example, if a list of vocabulary words presented to the intoxicated subject and few minutes later, they have to recall the words that were on the list. The only words that they remember are the last group of words and not the words that are in the beginning of the list. This is an initiation that their memory storage has been affected. "The absence of an effect at short term delay times indicates that cannabinodis did not impair the ability to perform the basic task, but instead produce a selective learning and/or memory deficit."(7) I did a study with two college students (Student A and Student B) who both smoke marijuana every other week. This particular study was done an hour before, while and after they were under the influence of the drug. Student A was watching television before she smoked marijuana, was asked which advertisement was splayed before the show started and she got four out of five of her answers correct. After this first section, she smoked a small dose of marijuana twice within an hour. Fifteen minutes after she smoked her last blunt, she continued her regular activity of watching sitcoms. When a commercial would come on, I would ask her simple questions like what happened before the show went to a commercial break. Her responses would be macro-answers about what was going on but when I asked her what the main character was wearing, she did not remember. This was ironic because the protagonist wore a bright yellow suit that my friend commenting on earlier when the show began ten minutes ago. Her short-term memory is weakening because she was only able to remember big picture information and not small picture. Though the results are interesting, I know that I would have had different response on someone else because it depends on how often the user smokes and if they have good memory prior to smoking weed.

Marijuana also impairs emotions. When smoking marijuana, the user may have uncontrollable laughter one minute and paranoia the next. This instant change in emotions has to do with the way that THC affects the brain's limbic system. The limbic system is another region of the brain that governs one's behavior and emotions. It also "coordinates activities between the visceral base-brain and the rest of the nervous system."(8) I am now going to use Students B to describe how emotions are affected by marijuana. Students B is an articulate and well spoken young woman who has a troublesome relationship with her best friends which gets her upset and tense up. But after she smoked one high dose weed, her body was relaxed however, she had trouble formulating her thoughts clearly and would talk in pieces and was jubilant. It has been researched that a person needs to have high dose of marijuana would be in the state of euphoria. High dose of marijuana is measured as "15mg of THC can cause increased heart rate, gross motor disturbances, and can lead to panic attacks."(9) Thankfully, Student A did not experience any of these extreme examples.

College students usually smoke marijuana because they are stressed over schoolwork and feel that marijuana can help them unwind. I have encountered marijuana smokers who are chilled and have no worries in the world but after the effect of the drug wears off, they're sometimes capable to tacking their problem or at the original state that they were in before the drug. The effects of happiness that marijuana usually cause to the user is not a lasting effect because even though a user smokes weed to get away from the troubles of his/her own life, they still have to face these problems after the effects of the drug wears-off. In a survey with college student, an organization called, parents: the Anti-Drug interviewed college students and found that "compared to the light users, heavy marijuana users made more errors and had more difficulty sustaining attention."(10) This was evident through my second experiment with Student B but not everyone who smoke high doses of marijuana experience the same affect.

The chemicals in marijuana bring cognitive impairment and troubles with learning for the user. "Smoking [marijuana] causes some changes in the brain that are like those caused but cocaine, heroin, and alcohol. Some researchers believe that has changes may put a person more at risk of becoming addicted to other drugs such a cocaine and heroin."(11) To prevent such harm, one must be cautious of their actions. Those who do not do drugs do not risk harm. So please the next day you light up, remember you that you central nervous system and brain will be at risk.

I smoked pot straight now since I was 13 years old Im 25 now I smoke it everyday literally through a Bong. I do not smoke well im at work but as soon as im off and for the remainder of the evening till I end up going to bed I do smoke. Now I read your page about the effects pot has on short term memory and brain function, Since I started smoking pot my asthma has vanished my grades went up in school my mind learns at quicker rates and my short term memory is far from gone There isnt much I forget about, unless it is because of my selective memory. Were the people that you tested on already marijuana smokers and also there are diff things to be taken into consideration when testing a substance for example the way it was grown marijuana has to be grown with nutrients and fertalizers to become potent enough to smoke for a high but when people use these fertilizers and such they sometimes do not leech the foods out from the plants which could lead to all kinds of bad side effects Im wondering if this kind of inforamtion is taken into consideration when giving test subjects marijuana to smoke or ingest.

I have no side effects other than a burnt out feeling after smoking all nite, and in teh morning of course but no brain problems like teh ones your website describes ... Chris, 7 July 2006

Yeah...i disagree on a lot of things that you have to say about this. Like for one some of the things you mentioned only happen while you're high, but after the high goes away those things do as well. Marijuana is not addicting like other hard drugs or alcohol. Also marijuana helps people with ADD, makes them focus better, and sometimes learn better. Sometimes when you smoke your nerves are more dull, but sometimes they can be more alive, so to speak. You need to know that everybody reacts to marijuana differently. So these test that your doing don't go for everybody. You need to let people know that or else thats kind of false information. Something that really got to me is when you were talking about how people do it to relax and get their mind of things and once the highs gone all the problems come back. Well once again everybody reacts differently to marijuana. A lot of people when there high talk a lot about there problems and life in general. What I'm getting at here is that while their high they can figure out there problems because being high brings you into a new type of world and you think about everything more carefully. It's like it opens up your brain and lets you think more into your thoughts and about whats going on. A lot of times they can solve their problems like that, especially when there is someone there with them to talk to. Marijuana also brings people together. I know someone who hated a bunch of people, but then one day ended up smoking with them. Next thing she knew, they were all the best of friends. I know a group of people and within that group you've got your "gangster" type, Punk type, goth type, preppy type, hick type, and the list just keeps going. All of them probably wouldn't even talk if it wasn't for marijuana bringing them together. I have a lot more to say but, I'm not going to because I have pretty much proved my point. Also marijuana brings the creativeness out in people. Some of the greatest authors, poets, music artist, painters, and so on, get their great ideas or create there masterpieces by being high.

P.S I would also like to add that I am a chronic user and I could remember your whole entire report on it. I also have excellent grades in school, in fact better than when I didn't smoke. I also would just like to add one more thing: You will not understand or ever be able to know how or what marijuana does to you unless you do it yourself. Trust me I once was all anti-marijuana and always said that it does all these bad things to you and blah blah blah. Well now I actually know how it really does make people feel because I have experienced it and everything there is in that type of world.

P.S.S I do agree with a few things that you had to say ... Jen, 9 November 2006

Hi, I really found this information very useful because it IS a misconvention among most of the college/university goers that marijuana increases concentration and increases the work capacity of an individual. I personally believe that it DOES increase the work capacity of the abuser to some extent, that's when the drug abuser is not in a "stoned" state of mind, but then too, what is at stake is the brain and central nervous system malfunctioning, which degrades the intellectual, job and social skills. So in my opinion, it's not a good deal ... Ankur Gupta, 25 February 2007

allright tell me something if you say a list of say 20-30 vocabulary words and you were asked to read them over, then you were asked say 5 minutes later to remember as many of those words as you can, do you really think you'll be able to do that? no i bet if you asked 100 people to do that that around 90% of them wouldnt be able to do it.

also riddle me this batman, how many people die each year from drunk driving accidents? now dont im pretty sure you've been drunk, and maybe once smoked pot in your life right? well which had a more sever affect the weed or the alcohol? yeah the alcohol!

im a stoner i will proudly say that. but if i have the choice between alcohol and weed i'd take weed anyday. i've driven high that isnt a problem. when im high i drive a little slower then normal and im lookin for the nearest 7-11.

weed isnt a drug it has no addictive characteristics what so ever!!! ciggaretes kill more people then alchol, guns, and pissed off husbands who come home early.

now weed doesnt lead to other drugs what so ever, i've been smokin the stuff everyday for the past 4 years and i have yet to even think about trying other drugs. if mother nature didnt want us to smoke it she wouldnt have put it here!

its as simple as that!! ... Reader on the web, 21 July 2007

Hello, I was told about this site as a friend of mine was completing a research paper. As I looked over it, there seems to be lots of misinformation involved, and my friend has abandoned this site. I wouldn't mind if you read through all of my message carefully. To start off, the following statement is not backed by any scientific evidence what so ever. "Marijuana impinges on the central nervous system by attaching to brain's neurons and interfering with normal communication between the neurons." This has been proven to be false on multiple occasions since the 1970's. Cannabinoids to not not impinge on the nervous system what so ever, this isn't lysergic acid we're dealing with. "Marijuana plant contains 400 chemicals and 60 of them are cannabinoids" This quote right here is misleading. Every plant is comprised of hundreds of chemicals. In fact, they're not even chemicals, they're just substances that comprise the plants' structure. Also, the majority of cannabinoids that are also found in cannabis are produced by the body naturally. Also regarding cannabinoid receptors. "These receptors control memory, thought, concentration, time and depth, and coordinated movement. THC also affects the production, release or re-uptake (a regulating mechanism) of various neurotransmitters." This is simply false, I do not know where this source came from. Your brain does not use cannabinoid receptors for memory, thought, or concentration. Next, saying that "When one's memory is affected by high dose of marijuana, short-term memory is the first to be triggered." is also blatantly false. Marijuana does not directly impact memory, but short term memory only when high off of THC or CBD is affected because the user may be 'distracted' if you will from the plant it self. Also, referring to a 'high dose' of marijuana is ridiculous. There is no such thing as a high dose of Cannabis because there is no possible way to overdose. It is strictly impossible. The most obnoxious quote that i've read from this site is, "Marijuana also impairs emotions. When smoking marijuana, the user may have uncontrollable laughter one minute and paranoia the next." I cannot believe that this would even be published. MARIJUANA DOES NOT CHANGE A USERS STATE OF MIND. PEOPLE CAN MAKE THE SAME RATIONAL DECISIONS AS THEY WOULD WHEN NOT USING THE PLANT. PERIOD. I am actually appalled by what I've read here, and I'm even more appalled by the sources you've used. Unlike true informational sites, you've only used web sources. That is completely absurd. If you look at any reasonable fact site about Cannabis you will see that the sources that are used are mainly from published books and factual citations. Please realize that much of what is on this web page is completely false and misleading. I wouldn't mind hearing a response soon to defend your case ... Spiros Thomas, 7 November 2007

The effects I've been having and am very worried about!

My memory is so f'd up more than usual lately. Examples today is my daughters b-day and while on facebook I went to my sister in-laws page and told her to call her sister(my wife) and tell her happy b-day then I get a call right away from my wife asking why I did that then I caught myself and felt like a idiot. there have been many similar things like this in last couple days.I'm 44 and have been smoking religiously for some yrs now. I smoke for back pain, stress, insomnia, acid reflex and socialy. I wondering if the way the plants were grown and the chemicals used have contributed to this. Or am I starting menopause and the two r just to much? I would love to quit but then what do I do for the reasons I smoke in the first place. I can't take pills cause the f with stomach. Also I have a friend who is very intelligent and also smokes everyday but she is fine and only a couple yrs younger. She works out and eats right she also reads allot and shows no signs of memory loss. I have been a preschool teacher for a long time and really don't do things to improve my memory or build my intellect.
I know lots of people who smoke Paralegals, Production people, and many more who all are functioning just fine and some not at all. Does they way medical mj is grown differ from whats on the street and the way it effects people? I wonder if I switch to medical mj will my mind stop f-ing with me?

andrew's picture

dude you have been smoking

dude you have been smoking marijuana for along time and i dont blame you its fun but if you switch to medical mj you'll have the same effects as you do with street weed. plusyour a school teacher and you smoke weed thats f&*^ed up

How is that fucked up? He

How is that fucked up? He smokes for a number of legit reasons. It dont mean shit just cuz hes a teacher. Hes human just like u r, so he will smoke weed just like u do. Anyone can smoke weed, a lot of ppl smoke weed, a lot more than u think. All kinds of people from all kinds of backrounds smoke so the only way to tell if somone smokes is to to ask, Unless its obvious they smoke( dreadlocks, blunt shells, etc, etc, etc)

smokin since 12 now 18. Blunts n bongs all day, everyday.reppin Nashville, TN. SO HIGH.

Just thought I'd contribute...

I've been smoking weed on and off since I was 16 and now I'm 20... I've always felt guilty about it and often times have quit for months and months at a time. In fact, I never really considered myself to smoke weed until recently I've accepted it. Up until now, my "experimenting" with weed was just that - experimenting. If someone were to ask me if I "smoke" weed, I would have said no. I've come to accept it now and it has taken me 4 friggen years to answer my own question - "Is it really that bad? Will it ruin my life? Will I change?"...I've read many forum discussions and seen many different opinions, and nobody can answer this question. The only person that can answer this question is yourself. I've asked myself If i would feel the same way if weed was legal? If it was treated like alchohol? No. I would absolutley not second guess smoking weed if it was legal and widely accepted.

Recently I've looked back on the past 4 years of me "experimenting" with weed, and I've realized that this drug owes me absolutley nothing. Some of the funnest times i've ever had were when I was high. It has never gotten me in trouble, never changed my goals, values, ambitions, and never changed my personality or who I am. I am currently in college with high 90s on the honor role.

One thing I have answered over the last 4 years is weed will not change who you are. The reason it has a bad reputation for ruining goals, ambition, youth, dreams, grades, etc... is because those people were already like that. If they didn't go to marijuana, they would have went to something else. It does not change who you are, it just makes being yourself more enjoyable. Everything you do is amplified. Everything is just slightly more enjoyable. So if you already enjoy sitting on the couch playing video games, then you will probably end up doing that when your high.

Me? I like watching documentaries and learning. I like exersizing and working out. Cleaning the house. Snowboarding. Being outside, going for walks, thinking about space. I liked doing these things before I smoked weed. Now that I smoke weed, I still do these things, they are just more fun to do.

Its all about using it responsibly. I know older professionals who like to have a couple glasses of whiskey every night after work. Do they let that interfere with their lives? No. Use weed responsibley.

It doesn't affect your ability to make responsible decisions. You would have to smoke so much weed before it interferes with your sense of responsibility that you would just fall asleep.

Get to know yourself when you smoke weed. Make it a treat. Dont use it 24/7. Treat it like alchohol. Would you drink beer all day, every day? Thats ridiculous. Smoke weed once and a while. On the weekends. After work. Treat yourself to it. Dont let it interfere with your priorities.

I like to smoke a joint and go for a walk at night. Get some fresh air. Think about life. Reflect on my day. Come back and tidy up the house, listen to some music.

What is wrong with that? Absolutley nothing.

If you know anybody who has problems because of weed, I beg you to reconsider the situation. Stop and take a look at the individual. Did marijuana REALLY make this person how they are? I highly doubt it. I guarantee you they were like this before they started smoking weed, and if weed didn't exist they would find something else.

The only reason weed isn't legal, is because the government has no way of controlling it. Tabacco can only be grown in massive fields. Marijuana, however, can be grown in your closet. The government can't control this, or tax it properly, or make money on it - so why would they legalize it?

I've spent many years wondering why Its hard to come across successful, professional testimonials about individuals smoking marijuana. I know they are out there. I've met those individuals who own business, have families and live fulfilled lives. So why can't we find they're testimonials on the internet? Most of those individuals don't need to answer these questions, they know the answers. And successful people keep it quiet. They don't go around telling people about it. This is another reason why the stereotype of marijuana smokers is how it is.

I figured I would atleast make my contribution to changing this trend. I owe it to marijunana to be represented properly, because it certainly doesn't owe me anything. I've had some good times with marijuana, and hopefully many more to come.

This is the only life you have to live. And you have been allowed to live this life on a beautiful world! Experience this world for yourself! Live your own life. Don't be ignorant to anything this world has to offer. It is yours to discover, nobody should dictate how you spend your time on this planet!

When all is said and done – when we’re old and grey, the only thing that really matters is if you’re happy with what you’ve done in life. That’s the only thing. Your world is composed of an unimaginable number of particles and atoms, and the pictures and sounds you think you know are painted by the mechanisms in your brain. Everything is artificial. Everything is designed by your senses. If you don’t get anything accomplished in your life, make sure you enjoyed it.

And if setting high goals and being ambitious is what makes you happy, then I am confident you will still be able to do this while using marijuana. The only thing marijuana makes you want to do, is be happy.

See, this is the true effect

See, this is the true effect of weed... a successful articulate arguement. People who abuse weed to escape their lives would easily find some other alternative in their attempt to self-destruct. However being aware and responsible will cause no damage and can actually be a nice break.

thank you sir for the best most lucid comments here.

Listen to the widsom

As posted by Brecko811 on Youtube, this guy is a genius:

"to have an addiction to something you need to have withdrawls when you quit...marijuana is not addictive...but people continue to do it because it is awesome"

Some substances are illegal because it is a very useful tool of oppression. You cant' really have a dialogue about a drug as relatively harmless as marijauna without putting it into the proper context. I suggest you all read your history of prohibition from the beginning.

This provides a basic timeline. http://www.druglibrary.org/schaffer/history/drug_law_timeline.htm

If you think about it, the concept of prohibiting one from possessing a substance is rather asinine in the first place.

Some of, if not the very fIf you don't believe me, why does Rush continue his tyrade after getting his maid to pick up 30,000 oxy's while people do time for possession of <1g of coke, weed,ex whatever? Yeah, marijuans and coke are addictive but oxycodone, hydrocodone, propoxyphene, meperidene, methadone, mophine and hydropmorphone are medicine. Anybody for an SNL "REALLY?" right here?

I leave you with Illegal Business

Cocaine business controls America
Ganja business controls America
KRS One come to start some hysteria
Illegal Business controls America
One afternoon around eleven o'clock
It was freezing cold
He was standing on the block
Sellin' cheeba
Mixin' dimes
Sayin' a rhyme
Just to pass the time
The cops passed by
But he stayed calm
'Cause the leather trench coat
Was keepin' him warm
But this time they walked by real slowly
He thought to himself
They look like they know me
They drove away
But he didn't stay
He jumped in the cab
And he paid his tab
But guess who he saw
When he hit the block
It was the same cop car
The same two cops
They jumped out quick
They pulled a gun
They said, "Don't try to fight
And don't try to run
Cooperate and we will be your friend
Non-cooperation will be your end"
He jumped in the car
And wile they rode
They ran down the list of things he owed
They said you owe us some money
You owe us some product
'Cause you could be right
In the river tied up
He thought for a second and he said
"What is this?
You want me to pay you
To stay in business?"
They said, "That's right, or you go to prison
'Cause nobody out there is really gonna listen
To a hood," so he said, "Good
I'll pay you off for the whole neighborhood"
Because
Cocaine business controls America
Ganja business controls America
KRS-One come to start some hysteria
Illegal Business controls America
(What can we get for sixty-three cents?)
A guy named Jack is selling crack
The community doesn't want him back
He sells at work
He sells in schools
He's not stupid, the cops are the fools
'Cause everyone else
Seems to go to jail
But when it comes to Jack
The cops just fail.
They can't arrest him
They cannot stop him.
'Cause even in jail
The bail unlocks him
So here is the deal
And here is the facts
If you ever wonder why
They can't stop crack
The police department
Is like a crew
It does whatever they want to do
In society you have illegal and legal
We need both to make things equal
So legal is tobacco
Illegal is speed
Legal is aspirin
Illegal is weed
Crack is illegal, cause they cannot stop ya
But cocaine is legal if its owned by a doctor
Everything you do in private is illegal
Everything's legal if they government can see you
Don't get me wrong
America is great place to live
But listen to the knowledge I give
Cocaine business controls America
Ganja business controls America
KRS-One come to start some hysteria
Illegal Business controls America
Illegal Business controls America
What can we get for sixty-three cents?
What can we get for sixty-three cents?
What can we get for sixty-three cents?
KRS-One comes to start some hysteria
What what what what
What can we get for sixty-three cents
Cocaine business controls America
Ganja business controls America
KRS-One come to start some hysteria
Illegal Business controls America
Yeah, illegal business controls America
(What can we get for sixty-three cents?)
Yeah, KRS-One comes to start some hysteria
(What can we get for sixty-three cents?)
Yeah, BDP takin' over America
(What can we get for sixty-three cents?)
Ganja business controls America
(What can we get for sixty-three cents?)
Cocaine, sensi, aspirin, coffee, morphine, sugar, tobacco
Got to go
(What what what what can we get?)
Illegal business controls America
(What what what can we get?)

Ganja business controls America
(What what what can we get for sixty-three cents?)
Yeaaah, cocaine business controls America
(What what what what can we get?)
Illegal business controls America

-If IT DIDNT MESS U UP TOTALLY NOBODY HERE WOULD BE EVEN BE ARGUING ABT IT.
-IF IT WAS AS HARMLESS AS THE WATER WE DRINK WUD WE EVEN BE ON THIS SITE.NATURALLY IT MESSES U UP BIG TIME!
-POT SMOKERS NEVER WANT TO ADMIT AND I USED TO COME UP WITH ALL SORTS OF JUSTIFICATIONS(its mother nature,it makes u come at peace with ureself, its a drug that spreads love,u perform better in bed,it opens ure mind up,broadens ure thinking etc etc).

-THE SIMPLE PLAIN TRUTH IS THAT THESE ARE ALL EXCUSES AND US LYING TO OURSELVES ONLY BECAUSE WE DONT HAVE THE COURAGE TO ADMIT AND QUIT IT.ALL THE PPL WHO HAVE SMOKED UP PLS TELL ME WHY THEN DO U GO CRAZY AT TIMES WHEN U RUN OUT,URE DEALER IS NOT ANSWERING AND U FEEL SUCH AN URGE THAT ITS HARD SLEEPING.YEAH RIGHT ITS NOT ADDICTIVE!!!!!
-u feel so safe in ure shell that u crave for that feeling everytime

-ALL the kids here who are in their teens SHOULD QUIT THIS SHIT IMMEDIATELY!IT FINISHES URE MOTIVATION IN THE LONG RUN.
-ITS NOT THAT U COME AT PEACE WITH URESELF ITS JUST THAT U BECOME SO LAZY THATA U START SETTING LOW GOALS FOR URESELF
AND U FEEL SO HAPPY SMOKING UP THAT U LOSE THE COURAGE/WILL TO WORK HARD AND ACHIEVE URE GOALS.

I HAVE QUIT THIS SHIT FOR GOOD AND I AM NEVER TURNING BACK.

I CANNOT EVER DISAPPOINT MY PARENTS AND MY GIRLFRRIEND AGAIN!

A person says y doesnt everyone just let us be in peace, they need to smoke up even as they r the ones messed up....BUT Y SHUD THEY NOT SAY ANYTHING...DO THEY NOT LOVE U AND WHEN THEY LOVE U Y SHUD THEY NOT EXPECT ANYTHING FROM U....WHEN U LOVE U NATURALLY EXPECT THE PERSON TO DO THEIR BEST WITH THIS ONE LIFE U HAVE....NOT SPEND IT SMOKING DOPE AND CONVINCING URESELF THAT ITS HARMLESS!!!

-i never wanna go down that road again where i smoke up..
-U ONLY REALISE THE HARM/DAMAGE IT DOES TO U ONCE U QUIT IT...AS ONLY THEN U CAN SEE FROM A NORMAL PREPECTIVE
i even used to justify it saying there is nothing as normal as they are just norms set by society and everyones idea of normal is different and they all need a good blunt thats all!they all need to chill!!!

-this one life we have has so many beautiful things to offer that its pathetic if u even waste 1hr smoking up!!
-it makes u an introvert in the long run and u START DOUBTING EVERYTHING!!!

all those presidents who have admitted to smoking up.....well if its so good y dont they smoke up while in office!!

initially i loved nothing more than smoking up but in the long run its miserable, pathetic and basically a delusion where u try to make every wrong seem like right and justify it in ure own mind.ure prespective differs greatly from that of a NORMAL person and u get irritated at every1 who talks against it.

-KIDS THEY SAY EXPERIENCE HAS NO SUBSTITUTE SO PLS STAY AWAY FROM THIS SHIT AND GET IT OUT OF URE LIVES!!NO NEED TO REINVENT THE WHEEL AGAIN.

IT TOOK ME 3MONTHS TO GET IT OUT OF MY SYSTEM,urine test after urine test i would pray when its out.IT STAYS IN URE LIVER FOR A LONG TIME.cigarettes are bad and so is alcohol

NOTHING IS BETTER THAN BEING NORMAL AND TRUST ME SAYING SOBER IS THE BEST HIGH!!!!

THE BEST HIGH!!!!

i can go on and on and tell countless experiences to prove my point and tell many other drawbacks/disadvantages but ill stop!

BEEN THERE,DONE THAT AND NEVER EVER WANNA DO IT AGAIN!!
THE HARDEST THING IS ADMITTING THAT ITS NOT HARMLESS!!

THE HARDEST PART IS COMING TO TERMS WITH THE FACT THAT ITS FAR FROM GOOD AND IT DOES FUCK U UP!!

The bravest person is the one who admits his problem/weakness and actually does something about it!

While i smoked i loved it....sometimes id smoke with a vengence sometimes i wouldnt smoke at that much.smoked blunts, smoked cigarettes filled with garda inside and laced with dark black chars on the outside and i used to love it!!
but after being off it and realising all that happens "WHILE U WERE SMOKING UP" i tell u that its one of the worst things u can do to ureself!

And its not the gateway to other things....marijuana itself is the worst what to talk abt it moving onto other drugs...

In the end once again im grateful for having the most patient parents in the world and a girlfriend who loved me all through!face it,admit it and quit it!

IF IT WAS SO HARMLESS NOBODY HERE WOULD EVEN BOTHER TO ARGUE THAT ITS SO GOOD AND HARMLESS....THEY WOULD JUST SHUTUP AND KEEP SMOKING IT BUT THE TRUTH IS THAT A VOICE KEEPS TELLING THEM THE TRUTH INSIDE BUT THEY WANNA SHUT THAT OUT,FIND JUSTIFICATIONS AND KEEP ON DOING WHATS WRONG.

-ASK A MURDERER OR A BANK ROBBER WHY HE DONE IT AND I ASSURE U THAT HE WILL JUSTIFY THAT AND GIVE U GOOD ENOUOGH REASONS!!! DOES THAT MEAN WHAT THEY DID WAS RIGHT???

ADIOS AMIGOS!WHATEVER U HAVE LEFT THROUGH IT IN THE FLUSH AND SHIT ON IT CAUSE THATS WHERE THIS THING TRULY BELONGS.

If you think you have smoked

If you think you have smoked more than anyone else who even looks at this article you must have a major addiction problem with whatever kind of business you were doing because if you truly do smoke that much you probably are getting into the dealing lifestyle. Give some examples to back up what you are saying. All you are saying is it's bad and you thank your parents and your girlfriend helped you, nothing about how if was bad for you. Saying that you found out that life sucks and blaming it on how much weed you smoked it not a good argument.

I'm 16 and started smoking

I'm 16 and started smoking weed at 15. I smoked twice a month for eight months, then all day, hardcore, for four months. It almost really fucked me up. The first few months were very fun. No serious problems, maybe slightly worse memory and being a bit slower. I was actually better at solving some puzzles in those puzzle books. But people who think it's god's herb haven't done it enough to know its power. After three months of constant use (GOOD shit), it turned on me. My memory, short-term and long-term, was seriously damaged, everyone seemed evil (and stupid), and I got extremely irritable. It also has a very dark side after a while. Also, doors looked creepy. It felt like I was in a hospital and someone was behind the room, waiting to murder me. It's been more than a month since I've quit, and the anxiety is getting a bit better. I usually only feel like I might "snap" when I get tired. Life seems a lot like a dream, but sometimes the realness is blasted in my face. It makes me feel sick, like I can't escape this nightmare. You discover interesting things in that period, but almost no one else can relate or take you seriously, so you start to live in your own world. I was seeing flashing faces on everything, and everything was SO annoying. I couldn't watch movies because they were always predictable, annoying, and obvious.

Everything was "in my face." I was living in a cartoon, a world full of caricatures. It's just way too much to handle. If anyone else feels the same way, or if you want to talk about the things that you felt when you smoked marijuana, I'd appreciate it. We can exchange emails later. Oh, and I always thought of suicide and there were signs of impending doom everywhere. It feels like there's nothing fun to do, nothing worth living for. But it's the drug. It gets better by the month, but it'll take a long time for you to feel completely normal again (if you've reached the stage of severe depression and mild psychosis). It's worth it though.

i know just how you feeel.
im sixteen years old and started when i was 15, also im a girl which is sucks. me and my best friend smoke weed everyday after school, either joints or cans. i dont know if it was just that i broke a guys heart i really liked and he didnt want me back or the fact my best friend got a boyfriend and started drifting aways from me but for those two weeks i had none, besides my mum and dad but they dont knoow i smoke weed even tho my dad does everyday. those two weeks i cryed myself to sleep every night it wasnt just a tear it was full on, then i would sit up and think why am i crying, than just start all over.. it was getting really hard, i was actually considering dying, i couldnt handle it. i thought to myself no fuck this im going to quit, but then when the weed was there infront of me i would always smoke it and couldnt stop myself. i am almost high everyday of my life but i choose too and so did you. i know what you mean about the anziety part of the weed, i got that way to hard. i used to be a good little, happy school girl last year, now this year im this girl that never smiles at people and never talk to my old friends.. people know ive changed and always tell me im not myself anymore, i know im not, i try so hard to communicate but they mean nothing to me anymore, i get so sketchy when i walk threw the school yard, i think everyone is looking at me all the time and judging me by my looks.i always have eminem play list on my ipod, he is literally my hero.. do you like him ?

killing yourself isnt the way to go, just stick in there and stay strong.

Dude.. Daniel. This is to you

Dude.. Daniel. This is to you from me

For such a long time I smoked so much weed, it got to me completely, where my life became a series of episodes in a revolving door.

The shaking, the tremors, the anxiety, the dryness, the deadness of it all. I became lifeless,, nothing mattered, no one understood me . I was paranoid, with disbelief, depression took a major toll, and life just twirled and twirled as much as i twirled the joints.

It's a dangerous game, where you roll your own wheel of fortune with the darkness that lies in the unknown.

Suicide, was such a common thought, weed was the need to stay 'alive', the highness of it all. After a while it got so boring though, it felt like a routine, something to come back to. It put me in such a weak situation for myself and infront of people around me, who noticed my 'flaw' some even used it to their advantage, creating a wall in a place where only the wind swirled and smoke swept through.

That was by far the most definitely self destructive thing I have ever done in my life. It showed me how far loneliness can take aperson, into their own 'dream world' when dreams disappear, shadows appear, and the need to question all of life is present.

My human interactions were crazy for like nearly 1 year after that.
A broken heart, and dozy minds hazed with smoke, fucked the head station.
My intuition was lost, my body stopped flashing words of detachment, and instead i got attached to lonely words which fed my brain, like the right overtaking the left. The battle between the 'good' and the 'bad'
Some crazy shit, but I will say that once you have been at that stage in your life, there is very little of the real world that can really scare your light away.

alot of you idiots do drugs like marijuana and some of you love it so much just like your life but ine day you might just lose your beautiful life and die god gave you so much and you, what are you doing with your life by taking drugs?
No one can change the things you've already done but you can always change your future by doing better thing and not doing crazy things like taking drugs and just by taking little amounts your still hurting your body and you never know when something can happen to you. And if something ad happens then think about how worried or sad your loved ones will feel but it won't be there fault it's yours.
Think about how you want your life in the furure to be.

Check your sources, please!

OK to make the sensational claim, "risk of becoming addicted to other drugs such a cocaine and heroin." you better have some serious PROOF! A broken Geocities link is pretty much the worst choice for providing evidence. Who is to say Marijuana some how alters your brain to be at more risk to try harder drugs?

I recall reading a study on The Netherlands and how heroin use DECLINED after the legalization of Marijuana. Why? Because plenty of people who smoke weed are content with that and perhaps the occasional use of alcohol. What leads people to harder drugs is the availability and association.
In other words, if people were going to a store to buy Marijuana like they would alcohol they never would have gained access to harder drugs. If your weed dealer offers you other drugs you may be more inclined to just "try them." Especially when you see other people doing this drug. In turn it makes it socially acceptable. When you go to a store to buy just weed this situation is eliminated.

By the way, if you are going to do your own "experiments" at least be consistent with your results. If Student A could remember 4/5 of the commercials before toking up, how many did she remember AFTER? Citing "macro-answers" does not reflect an accurate analysis.

People need to jus chill out and smoke some green

Seriously- I mean what about all of the cultural significance weed and other drugs have created? Great artists and musicians used to smoke. What would the 60s have been like without people getting fucked up? Whenever the goverment wanted to go to war all the people smoking green jus wanted to chill and to have peace. Lsd's the same way. it got illegalized because of counterculture movements even though it was useful and awesome. Point is reefers not as bad as most make it seem. people who write stuff like this miss the big picture anyway and jus see all drugs as bad. Its also less dangerous than legal drugs like alcohol and xanex. At least its natural too. Cigarrette smoke is way nastier and worse for you, so fuck the whole deal about memory loss and all the other small desperate attempts to make weed look bad. Im smoking right now and Im doing alright.

to each it's own

Coming from a person like myself who has not smoked marijuana in the past two years, I don't criticize those that do. I feel one golden rule in the is to each it's own, noone knows yourself better than you do, and if you feel like weed is necessary, helpful, a stress-releiver, or just the best thing smoking then smoke on. Just know what effects it has on the body and most of all the nervous system.

People jus need to chill out and smoke some green

Seriously. Imagine if some of the artists who've smoked weed never smoked. Lots of cool aspects of culture come out of drug use. Good musicians used to smoke alot. What if nobody ever got fucked up in the 60s? Lsd is the same way. its illegalized because of countercluture movements even though it was highly usefull and awesome. The thing about it is if you have to get it down to this much of a science to prove its bad your arguments pointless. Besides other drugs like alcohol and xanex, (and ciggarettes as far as smoking goes) are much worse for you...and are legal. So fuck the whole deal about memory and shit. Just Goes to show that a lot of people exaggerate shit to make it seem a lot worse than it is and turn it into mass propaganda. I'm smoking right now and Im doing alright.

I smell Doubt

I've always wondered why no one ever showed if the beneficial effects of marijuana outweigh the negative effects? And I also think that studies should put into consideration other substances cannabis users use. They're not all 100% marijuana, and more often than not, it's with alcohol. Which leads me to another question; is alcohol worse for you than marijuana? And what exactly do you consider "high doses" or marijuana? And is this peroidically throughout the day or smoking it all at once? I found when reading this, I have a lot of doubts and questions all the way through. Be more specific, my friend, and try to tackle your next project with a more... Neutral viewpoint.

Like most of the people that

Like most of the people that have been commenting on this page, I too am a chronic pot smoker. And like most people were saying, i havn;t experienced any kind of trouble that this student has written in his report. But, on the other hand, the main reason why most people think that they are fine with marijuana, or that it helps them is because they have become mentally addicted to it..like someone posted: "I find, when im high i keep my head down and focus on my work. When im not high i'm looking around for someone to get high with." This, and many other comments similar to it, are a classic sign that these people need marijuana to get through their day...people say that the weed makes them more insightful, or can study better or whatever, i think that its a load of sh** because the only reason you can function "better" when high is because you actually need it to function like a person who doesnt smoke marijuana does. im sorry to any i have offended but it can turn into an expensive habit if u become addicted. Ps you can become addicted idc what neone says nething in this world can beaddicting marijuana isnt an acception.

Sentence Structure and Grammar

I am a home school mom and am trying to teach my daughter about the importance of Grammar and Sentence structure. While we were able to glean insight into the subject of the harms THC can create in a person at high doses; we had a hard time with the last few paragraphs because of errors in the sentence structure, punctuation and grammar. I just think that the article should have been screened better before putting it out as an example. Excellence in writing should be expected not only in English 202 but Biology 202.
I copy this passage to show what I mean.

"It has been researched that a person needs to have high dose of marijuana would be in the state of euphoria. High dose of marijuana is measured as "15mg of THC can cause increased heart rate, gross motor disturbances, and can lead to panic attacks."

And in the end we all die anyways right. So why not enjoy yourself while you're here.

Marijuana and Short Term Memory

Memory impairment and marijuana is a serious issue, but I am not convinced it is the marijuana. I am a teacher and notice most young people today have serious short term memory impairment. As a middle aged woman, I have a better memory than most of my students including my son. But then I had to use my memory more than young people do today.

Most students cannot remember anything beyond three days, but they don't smoke marijuana. The educational system has changed in that students are not required to memorize as much material as students had to when I was in school.

In addition, technology has made it easy for people to not use their memories or brains that much. Just look at the quality of films today. It is all about sensationalism and special effects with little plot to think about.

Keep in mind that before there was writing and printing people depended on their memory to pass down information. People memorized long epics like Beowulf and passed them down to the younger generations orally. Today, we don't have to think much about anything. Young people don't even read that much except for easy to read best-selling books.

If we don't use it, we lose it. Consequently, I am not convinced that the severe memory loss that is cited here is from marijuana use, but I strongly feel this loss is a cultural phenomenon. In short, most young people I teach report the same experience of short term memory impairment even though they don't use marijuana.

im a huge pot head, and i

im a huge pot head, and i love it. i have been smoking since i was 12 years old and to tell you the truth . the first time i tried it i hated it. i swear that i will never do it again. but now its a whole different ball game. i dont smoke when i go to school, or work, but when i clock out and my day is over, my night just begins. from the moment i go home i spark up to the moment i go to bed.that is my relaxing time. i hit the gym hard to excersice my heart and lung,i excersice for me. as soon as i leave the gym it all i can think about , is just to unwine and have the night to myself. smoking is not for everyone. or at least not for everyone the first few times you try it,sorta speak. i have been smoking for the longest time, im doing great in school. which i have always done well in. im a hardworker. and i have goals that seem impossible to accomplish but i tend to strive for them. to go full force.

let talk about drugs and alcohol. coca, heroine, drinking. ciggerttes those are hard as hell drugs to get addicted to. you can go to the store and purchase ciggs and beer. and you hear every year that someone has died from either drinking and driving of lung cancer (etc.) yet people still do it. and those same people have the nerve to say that weed is bad. yet out of all my years, i have not yet coome across anyone diying from excessive weed smoking. i hear overdosing , alcohol poisoning, i have not yet heard overdoing on marijuana... therefore is does not kill you . it may harm you in some cases , but reallly anything you do these days can kill you. but to tell you the truth to die from weed is unheard of. and if i do die from smoking weed to much .. well damn ill be doin something harless to others and fun for me. ill die happy. THEREFORE WEED DONT NOT KILL YOU .... everything else does

indeed it's bad but some

indeed it's bad but some people use it to get away feel better it's recommanded to stay away but now in days nobody listens so there's no point on tellin people to stop they will make that decision when they get a big wake up call people or homies just say try it try it but the're just not good friends so the best thing to do is to stay away from those friends
