I would like to believe in the afterlife, but my logical mind rejects the idea. The thought of all the knowledge that I have learnt during my life rotting away with my body is an unpleasent one. How do you prove that our minds and souls don't die with our bodies? All view points welcome.

I think Hell is a place invented as a means of controlling people. Threat of an unpleasant afterlife will prevent people doing wrong on Earth. People like to think that people who do them wrong will suffer horribly, even in a different life. I like the idea of reincarnation. I believe that regression is proof of reincarnation, but we have Lethe water in the underworld to help us forget the pastlives. I think that our souls break up into little bits, like our bodies do, but I have not studied philosophy before. The bits of soul become bits of other souls, as the bodies become bits of other bodies. I think that everything in the universe has a soul, like rocks and things. If they're made of matter (bodies), why not have souls too?

I want to know if somebody can help me. My research is about the relationship between the history of economic thought and the history of psychology. The question is that William Stanley Jevons, one of the main mathematical economists, and a disciple of Alexander Bain, justifie the use of mathematics in economic theory using an argument very similar to Fechner and Wundt psychophisical theories, but when Jevons wrote, Bain had no relation with tese theories. Perhaps somebody knows if Jevons had any relation with Lewes or Carpenter. Excuse me if my question is not very interesting for psychologist or philosophers, and thank you for your help

I am trying to help a college student with a paper that's due Thursday for philosopy. The topic is: suppose that you were in an accident and vital organs were damaged and replaced with bionic parts. One there would be physical structure changes and would you be a different person? Then you would have to argue either that you agreed with Descarte's position of mind/body that they are independent with one another or your own opinion. I've looked up Decarte's Error, which talkes abt. the mind/body being interdependent. I don't understand any of this talk or how to write a 5pg paper as this theme. Does this make any sense to anyone? If so, please give me some ideas on how to write this paper. The student is talking with the TA today but both of us are confused with the topic. Please help!

Subject: Non existance of evil

Evil exist because good people let. We must be accountable and responsible for all of our actions and thoughts and that is the reality we create and the karmic implications we shall reap. To transcend karma we must act from the deathless non self with all causality absent by transcending selfish desire. I'm tired of knowledge being used to depreciate the value of life. What good is science if it allows us to further exploit our Mother Earth and her children. Everything boils down to how we treat ourself and eachother, and when true realizations occur we realize we are not ourself but the universal self, or non self. As the Buddha said belief in a self is the source of alienation and is the cause of humanities suffering. It is now survival of the emotionally expressive and mentally transcendent, not the fittest. When will humanity get beyond the illusions of physicality. See the unseen nature that is the cause of the physical manifestations. If science seeks to disprove the existance of Ultimate Reality or God, then one has not been humbled by the miracle of this exixtance. THE UNIVERSE IS OUR SELF, PEACE. This is a study of the art of concentration. You will learn that brain chemistry under certain condition will allow the person to feel & actually experience the touch of the hidden power reflected in Michaelangelo's Creation of Adam. I compare this divine state of mind in nature as a dancing bee reflecting the location of the flower to other worker bees, a touch of a fractal mathematical state of being in science, an opening & closing of red sea in religion. Please note that it is not something that one can learn in few minutes, it needs a patient thinker. More at http://www.beedance.com

Hi, my name is scott, i was born on april 23, 1960. I have several vivid memories of what i`m sure is a past life dating somewhere in the mid 40`s to mid 50`s. Most of the memories involve a woman, a man, and a redheaded teenage boy. My mother has known of these memories since i was a small child, and seeing that she was the only care provider for me and my five siblings agrees that they must be from a past life. I feel that these three people were my family, but i can`t remember any names or places. I would like to know if it`s possible through hypnosis or something to somehow find out more about the people in my past life. I believe because of the time period that some of the people involved could still be alive. Anyone with any imformation, contact me at mak1960 @ aol.com. thanks.

Subject: Why it does not matter whether or not God exists
Date: Wed Nov 4 13:56:00 EST 1998
Comments:
Sartre explains in "Existentialism and Humanism" why it does not matter whether or not God exists as His existence for the individual depends on whether or not the individual CHOOSES to believe in Him. We simply cannot KNOW whether or not he exists as we are not capable of knowing any objective truth. What is true is what corresponds to the facts (correspondence theory of knowledge). However, we can never know all the facts as all we know is the ideas in our own minds. It makes more sense to try to accept a subjective truth: that there are degrees of truth which correspond to the ideas in our minds. When what appear to be truths confront us, we interpret them and choose whether or not to hold them as certain. Therefore, if we are ever confronted by the angel Gabriel, whether we believe him to be real, a hallucination or a dream, we will be CHOOSING our belief. We cannot be certain that what appears to be the angel Gabriel is not the devil in disguise. I conclude that God can, and indeed does exist subjectively, but we can never know whether or not He exists objectively. I challenge somebody to criticise this theory.

Oh please, the afterlife is not INVENTED, in order to control through fear and threat, merely it is an essential intrinsic force in any society through which morality can be justified. Nobody would truly claim that society without some form of common morality which as it turned out was determined by a universal belief in judgement is possible.

A few comments back, Benjy mentions that "the afterlife...is an essential intrinsic force in any society through which morality can be justified". Or something along those lines. This is pure crap. For those of you interested in understanding (with defective intellects like yours, I use this word figuratively) the rational basis of "morality", I suggest you go to your local library and look up "game-theory" and "the prisoners dilemma". In fact, there is alot of justification in saying that the rational solution to the Prisoner's Dilemma is the logical/mathematical foundation of ethics. Go back to your television set and let the chefs cook dinner...

The user N, some messages prior, claims that the "objective existence of God" can never be known, and uses some passing reference to the Correspondence Thoery of Knowledge. I would just like to point out, that the CTK is based on complety circular reasononing and leads to total idiocy. Anyone willing and able to look at this theory closely will see this as obvious. In passing, the non-existence of God, at least as the Judeo-Christian-Muslim tradition conceives Him, has been logically proven with almost total certainty. I refer you to the book "Quantification Theory" by David Lamb. It is simplistic, but should get the point across to you jabbering idiots.

Err...Hello?

I have found a belief in God - probably a Christian one. I hate to tell you, but you cannot know God through intellectualisation. Science doesn't actually claim to be able to measure that which is immeasurable. Also, logic has to start from a premise which may or may not be true. You could use logic to prove that premise, but even trying to prove logic ends in circularity. Logic itself is an assumption: a Cartesian foundation if you like. If you are reading this and understand what I have gone on about so far, you obviously know what is wrong with Descartes' theories, foundationism included.

Let's face it. Our brains do not have the capacity to process all the information we receive correctly. It takes mental short cuts: uses categorisation and schemas etc. We cannot 'know' in the sense of being certain. We can only 'know' in the sense of understanding.

If you think you're clever, try giving Christianity a chance. Keeping an open mind, ask God to make himself known to you and He will.

'Jesus said, "Listen, I stand at the door and knock. If anybody hears my voice and opens the door, I will come into his house and eat with him, and he will eat with me." ' Revelation, chapter 3, verse 20.

The one feature common to all religions is the belief in an afterlife; that life continues in some form after death. It is easy to see why we might want to believe in an afterlife, but wanting to believe in something, from the tooth-fairy onwards, doesn't of itself make it true. Our notion of truth since the Enlightenment has been that propositions or hypotheses are true only if they can be verified or proved to be true, by means of obervation via the five senses, sight, hearing, smell, taste & touch, plus systematic experimentation and testing, in combination with our intellectual powers of reason and logic. This is the whole basis of science, of scientific knowledge, as against simple faith or belief. We believe that water boils at 100C because it can be proved, over and over agin, as often as we like. We no longer believe that illness can be cured by the application of leeches, because that theory or belief has been disproved or invalidated. It is not possible to prove that there isn't a life after death, but firm evidence to the contrary is lacking; there may be a life after death, but there is a distinct lack of convincing proof or evidence to that effect. Obvious questions would arise as to the nature of an afterlife. Is everyone "up there", or only true believers? Are people as they were at the time they died, old and sick, or as they were when young and in their prime? Will our favorite pets be there? If so, will other animals be there? Will all the animals that have ever lived be there? Wouldn't it get a bit crowded? People have believed in all kinds of things at different times, or in different places and cultures - female circumcision, bodily mutilation, cannibalism, human sacrifice, burning witches, binding up little girls' feet, slavery, tormenting animals for entertainment and so on. The fact that people have practised or believed in some bizarre or irrational thing for, say, the last 4,000 years, or that it has become "part of their culture", is not a good enough reason for continuing with it for the next 4,000 years. It is surely possible for humankind to progress, to move on to better things and more enlightened times.

I need to do research on 3-4 important child development theorists. I have chosen Piaget and Erikson, who is another theorist who is well-known in child development and would be easy to locate a lot of information on.
