Brain Matters Forum
This is the beginning of a site where pre-college students can post questions about the brain and we will respond to the best of our ability. Please feel free to use it at any time.
Serendip's forums sometimes get longer than what can conveniently be accessed and displayed. They are, at the same time, in their entirety an important part of what Serendip has become at any given time (and, of course, particular contributions may well be of lasting significance). To try to balance needs for easy display and those of continuous and permanent record, only this year's forum comments are displayed on this page with earlier comments being preserved elsewhere. I really don't have a comment; it is more of a question. I was have a discussion with my sister and her boyfriend, and I said that no one can THINK about more than one thing at a time. To say the least, he did not agree. I was wondering if I misinterpreted some info. I heard, or has anybody else heard that before? If you have, can you cite the source for me?

I read it on a web site about controlling the dreams. But it worked only at times. Can U suggest any other method? I read in a magazine that a japanese company is making an equipment to control dreams. What is the biological theory behind this and what is the technology they are using?

I'm a 6th grade student and have just found out that I am having seizures in the right side of my brain. My doctor said they were called simple partial seizures, and I was wanting to know what does the right side do? What does it work. They put me on some medicine called lamictal, and I really hope this works, because I've had a lot of trouble in school and with my grades, and I want to improve but I sometimes can't help my self with some of the things I do. I've been told for YEARS that I have ADHD and my mom and the doctors have had me on everything just about that they make for that. I also have anxiety and depression, but I feel more anxious and I do depressed. But would these seizures have any effect on my behavior or my work in school. I write with my left hand and its so sloppy I can't even read my own writing. I have trouble making complete sentences. My mom is helping with this so you will understand what I want to know. Could you please help us and tell us what the right side of the brain is used for. Thanks alot.

I had a MRI of my head and everything was fine except for "abnormal generalised atrophy" my doctor said its in the white brain matter at the back up high in the middle of my head. Its way more than it should be for my age. No strokes or blocks and all flows and everything else are normal. doctor made an urgent appointment with the neurologist. I have had a lot of things going on to get the MRI. Doctor said no-one knows what the white matter does. It must do something. Someone told me my brain is dying. Is it something like alzeimers? that's happening? My grandmother and my aunt had strokes and got dementia and didn't know what was going on. Im worried and want to have some knowledge while I wait for the doctors appointment. Can you answer soon please.

LET'S LET SCIENCE CLOSE THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP!
"From birth to three are the key years for developing a child's intelligence --don't wait ‘til kindergarten !"
From the book Kindergarten Is Too Late by Masaru Ibuka
In the early 1980s, scientists discovered that the brain grew in power when it was stimulated, particularly during the crucial first three years. Prior to that, it was commonly thought that the inherited genes were solely responsible for our intelligence. Not so anymore. Suddenly, we learned that the environment has a dramatic affect on intelligence. Since we can control the environment, we can now control the level of our children's intelligence! I believe that there are very few things in or out of science that is more important than this.
Nothing Einstein ever invented compares with the discovery that we are not born with a fixed amount of intelligence.
To illustrate this brain growth phenomenon in simple terms, think about what happens when a body builder strenuously exercises his muscles. With enough exercise, his muscles will grow larger and stronger. That is nothing new, everyone knows about body building. But what is new is that scientists have demonstrated that the very young human brain, when stimulated or exercised, grows in power like our muscles. I call this brain building. But interestingly enough, while there is a limit to muscle growth, there is no known limit to brain growth or intelligence. It all depends on the amount of stimulation provided and at what age.
If ten minutes a day is an ordinary amount of brain stimulation and that creates an average IQ, what happens if a very young child is given an hour a day? Or two hours? Three? Will we then get child prodigies or super geniuses with IQs in the 200+ range? Will we get extremely capable children who routinely enter kindergarten already reading at the fifth grade level or above?
More than anything else, giving our children genius level IQs will solve many of our education problems, including the achievement gap.
A tot or toddler's brain can be stimulated by simply making it think. Thinking acts as a brain growth catalyst. The more a child thinks, the higher its intelligence. Stimulation that makes children think can come from a variety of sources. Conversing with adults, listening to music, or learning how to read are the most effective. For the stimulation to have the greatest effect, the child should be three or under and the stimulation should be relatively intense, on a daily consistent basis, and last at least an hour a day for about two years.
Magic occurs in a child's brain when he or she is learning to read when first learning how to walk and talk.
Is it difficult to teach a tot or a toddler how to read? Well, think of it this way. They are already learning how to talk, an incredible intellectual feat. If the brain can handle the spoken language, why would anyone doubt that a very young child can learn how to read? And let's not forget their amazing facility with foreign languages that adults cannot hope to match.
The very young human brain is America's great wasted natural resource.
When my son was two, I began to teach him how to read. I had no training in reading instruction. In fact, at the time I was a practicing accountant. Nevertheless it was easy to teach him the alphabet and their related sounds. With enough repetition and lots of patience, I learned that I could easily teach him how to read, spell, and even compute. And what a joy the experience turned out to be! As I write this, I am envious of all those parents out there who may try it too. Incidently, he ended up reading at the fourth grade level with an IQ of 148 on the day he entered kindergarten. It was this teaching experience that originally fired my interest in preschool education.
This brain growth phenomenon ranks in importance with the discovery of fire and the invention of the alphabet.
* * *
None of what I have written is made up fiction. Many others have written extensively on the recent brain discoveries. However, because nothing much has ever been done to demonstrate this brain miracle, I was prompted to write this essay.
Here is what brain researcher William Fowler ( University of Chicago ) said about child prodigies such as Mozart:
"In no instance where documentation exists have I found any individual of high ability who did not experience intensive (emphasis added) early stimulation as a central component of his development . . . The unvarying coincidence of extensive early stimulation with cognitive precocity and subsequent superior competence in adulthood suggests that stimulation is a necessity for the development of high abilities."
And another scientist said:
"Give me a dozen healthy infants and my own specific world to bring
them up in, and I'll guarantee to take any one at random and train him to become any type of specialist I might select - doctor, lawyer, artist,
merchant, chef and yes, even beggar and thief, regardless of his talents, penchants, tendencies, abilities, vocations, and race of his ancestors."
- John B. Watson, 1924
Then there is Dr. Laszlo Polgar, a psychologist from Hungary. Several years ago he and his wife decided that their children should be geniuses. Using the game of chess as a brain stimulation tool for his daughters, he literally created three extremely intelligent chess grand masters. What a great story this is!
With brain building, even poor or uneducated parents can create an extremely intelligent child. It really all depends on the amount of time and effort parents are willing to invest. Wealth or status has nothing to do with this.
This will be done someday. It may take fifty, a hundred or more years, but someday some hero will organize a Watson like project with parents and prove everything I have been saying. Because of their blind adherence to developmentalism (an idiotic education belief that is very much against early reading), it won't be an educator. Instead, I think our hero will turn out to be a school board member, a cognitive neuroscientist at a university, or a foundation member interested in education. But no matter who does it, he or she will be the one to not only end the achievement gap but far more importantly, forever change education in America. That's what the magic of very early learning can do.

I just got my computer and I've always wanted to say what I think people need to know about this disease.
My son is now 25 years old and has been battling this disease all his life, but we did not know till he was 21 yrs. old.
He was diagnosed with dyslexia and borderline ADD when he was in 3rd grade.
Of course his symtoms only increased along with other problems from being put in the slow class, which never stopped till he quit in the 10th grade.
Even though my son did not finish school, he has always been very gifted since he was 3 yrs old. He started sculpting and drawing about that time, except his worked looked liked an adults, except better. This has always continued until he was about 17 when he started having severe deprssion. Then, the mania started, but was hidden because he worked hard jobs, and that took alot of his energy away, he also was self medicating with marijuana, which most bipolars due to calm thereselves. Then at 22 he hit rock bottom and was almost catatonic before I got him into a good doctor, and it took 4 other doctors to almost kill him with different medications, trying to find one that worked. Finally, in 2005 my son was put on Seroqul and Xanax. These medications saved my son. He continues to improve, but is on disability due to the seriousness of his disease and not being able to work. I truely hope this information can help some other mother out there so she won't have to see her son suffer as I have and continue to, as he will have this disease until there is a cure. I f anyone reads this and would like to get more of this story, or if i CAN HELP someone, please email me, I would love to correspond with others who know this kind of pain.
Sincerly, Sue Ryan
