One can think narrowly about education as what one participates in as a student, a teacher, a parent, or more broadly about it as a sometimes argued about, sometimes ignored political or social phenomenon. Or, still more broadly, one can think of education as something everyone is to one degree or another involved in all the time, and something which critically sets the tone for societies and cultures. From this last perspective, every educational issue is both a mirror of and a key influence on aspects of society and culture ... and thoughts about such issues are the essential grist for always possible improvements in education, with those being in turn the basis for meaningful change in culture and society. The web is a rich source of such thoughts and the following provides the results of an exploration of them in the early summer of 1998 by Felicia Lew, an undergraduate at Bryn Mawr College, working with Paul Grobstein. Specific topics reflect their particular interests, as well as preparation for a new summer institute for precollege educators at the College. Commentary is by Felicia.
